Flea’s a late Summer baby. In some ways, this is a good thing – birthday parties will always be cheaper because I don’t have to invite the whole class, for starters. But it also means she’s going to start school in three weeks. Good grief - she hasn’t even turned four yet! I’d originally planned to send Flea to a Montessori school but that idea was scuppered when we moved - potentially subversive educational systems are actually illegal in Lytham, so I checked out the local state … [Read more...]
Magical Moments of Parenting #245
So you know sometimes kids can just say things that make your heart melt? It's about their innocent perspective, and how their freedom from embarrassment means they just say whatever is in their little hearts. This post isn't about one of those moments. I picked up Flea from her summer nursery yesterday and - as is usual - she sat in the back of the car chatting away, telling me about all the boys she's played with that day (Flea doesn't *do* girls). "I played with Sean, … [Read more...]
The moment you realise your kid is braver than you.
One of the nice things about having children is that, basically, you're better than them at most stuff. Oh, sure, we all love our children and we'd lay down our lives etc etc, but admit it - it's pretty cool having someone around who thinks that you're basically a cross between the Delphic Oracle and a pants-wearing Superhero, right? Then there comes that transitional moment when your kids realise that you're just a regular grown-up and therefore fallible. Not only that, … [Read more...]
Things to do in Manchester When You’re 3
Flea and I were invited to Manchester this weekend to try out the city's cultural attractions. Since we are completely ALL ABOUT high culture and stuff we jumped at the chance to spend a few days exploring the various kid-friendly exhibits and events at Manchester's many museums, galleries and public spaces. Here's our run-down of the best things to do in Manchester when you're three: Bagsy the best bed while Mummy figures out how the lights work (yes, she had to … [Read more...]
A short intermission
The lovely people at creativetourist.com have invited me and Flea to go and stay in a plush hotel for the weekend while exploring Manchester's family-friendly film festival, so we're off! Of course, when I say "we're off", what I mean is we're off just as soon as I: Manage to persuade Flea that she doesn't need to take four Playmobil figures, Mr lion, Max the Monkey, Football Ted, Cheeky Monkey, Max the Monkey and Monkey puppet. Remember where I put the spare … [Read more...]

The Other Mothers
It’s bad news, I’m afraid. I’m raising a freak. An Other Mother told me this recently, and I’m sure she’s right. She has manicured nails, highlighted hair, a cleaner and a husband, and is therefore almost certainly better than me in every way. I’m sure you have your own Other Mother. Maybe even more than one. They’re the women who say things like: “Now I’m only saying this because I’m your friend,” or “Well, it’s just my opinion of course, but…” before completely … [Read more...]
I’d just like to thank you all for coming….
I'm going to start by pointing out that I am a proper Northern person and therefore don't do sentimental posts. But, that said, I'm so pleased by how well this blog has been doing. It's been a little over two weeks since I launched Who's the Mummy, and I've been amazed to receive 300 comments from readers and 5,000 visitors in that time. I've also had a great response to the Top 100 British Parent Bloggers index, which will be updated next week (comment now to nominate … [Read more...]
Flea’s bedtime story video
I'd completely forgotten about this video - it's from last year, Flea reading her favourite bedtime story, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". See? With the right coaching, your children can read their own bedtime stories, thereby saving you a job. I particularly enjoy how 'five plums' sounds like 'dry bums' (well, to my depraved ear at any rate) and how she just makes up something random that sounds a bit like 'salami'. … [Read more...]
Monday, bloody Monday
Five things I've learned today: The universe has a twisted sense of humour. So, I posted last week about my paranoia that Flea would choke to death on a piece of apple skin. And this morning, Flea choked on a piece of apple skin. Fortunately, I was sitting next to her at the time and was able to do some back slaps and get it out, but good grief - we're so going back to peeling them tomorrow. There is something on earth more painful than standing on Lego in bare feet. It's called … [Read more...]
