Welcome to the April 2010 Tots100 index of the UK's top 100 parent blogs and bloggers!
This month's index of British Mummy and Daddy bloggers sees some changes. The biggest is that our new sponsor, Familyholidays, is now on board. To celebrate the first month of working together, the company is giving away a ticket to the CyberMummy parent blogging conference on July 3rd to one member of the index. You'll notice the scores this month are significantly higher than usual. This is because the index is now being calculated automatically, and ALL the blogs submitted are fully scored and ranked – when I was doing the index manually, I would score all the blogs but only rank around 150.
As ever, let's remember this is an index. It will not make your behind smaller or your hair shinier. It is not a measure of your contribution to the human race. It's just a great way to find lots of blogs, and for bloggers to reach new readers. It's meant to be fun. Please use the index as a springing off point to find even more great blogs. Explore!

I’m pretty staggered to be at number 3, I’m sure hosting the BMB carnival helped me this month.
You scored just under 1200 so not a million miles off. You’re losing out on Google links. I suspect you’re quite a new blog, and these things take time to build up. As a rule of thumb, search for your blog home page on blogsearch.google.com and see how many results come up. Once you’re looking at 20+ links, you’re going to be in a much better position to make the index. Hope that helps! S.

As with the commenter above, you’re losing out on Google Links. I’d keep an eye on those, if they’re not right, you might try submitting a site map to Google, which can help. But all your other scores are pretty good!

There’s a link in the right hand sidebar to a primer article that explains in easy terms how the index is calculated – but basically we look at how many people subscribe to your blog, how many people link to it, how many people comment on it, and how many people talk about it in places like Twitter and Digg.
The idea is to give you a rough idea of what are the 100 most popular parent blogs – but it’s not, you know, Stanford University level science or anything, it’s just a fun way to promote your blog and find other blogs to read.
I think you’d have a good chance of being on the list, and I love your blog so just leave me a comment with your blog name, URL and Twitter ID and we’ll add you to the mix for next month.

Not precisely. More blogs and websites need to link to your blog in their posts – so basically you need to write stuff that other blogs will link to.

It’s most likely that the blogs linking to you aren’t themselves indexed by Google. But publishing a sitemap yourself *may* help (this is pretty simple to do, and there will be instructions for your specific blog platform). Maybe give that a try?

The blogs are indexed and I have a sitemap. My code is squeaky clean and I’m not in the Google sandbox.
I know you already use Technorati authority in the scoring system, but is there any scope for using Technorati inlinks instead of or in addition to Google Blogsearch as technorati seems to pick up inlinks better?
I suspect the problem may be the blogs linking into you aren’t indexed, rather than your sites aren’t being indexed, if you see what I mean.
We’re aware Google doesn’t pick up everything, but between Google and Yahoo, we do get most links. We did used to also count Inlinks on Technorati but the service dropped this from their API some months back, and we stopped using it at that point. Another major weakness, even if we did have access to that data, is that Technorati only picks up links to sites it is indexing FROM other sites it is indexing – so it only looks at a tiny proportion of sites overall. The combo of google and Yahoo is, I think, much fairer overall.
The blogs linking to me are indexed, but Blog Search won’t pick them up for whatever reason.
