The Parent Blogger Time Capsule

Time Capsule
Because I’m a positive parenting role model (cough) and I love craft activities (even bigger cough) and gardening (verging on emphysema at this point) this half-term Flea and I made … a time capsule.

Apparently, Flea read about time capsules in one of her Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, so now we’re decorating a box which will contain some vital mementoes of our life in 2011 for someone in the future. Flea has made a drawing, selected a photograph, and is going to add in one of her DS games (hey, if the kid wants to bury a video game, who am I to stop her?)

Then we will go and bury the whole shebang on the beach. The activity has got me thinking about what I’d contribute to a time-capsule – what are the things that capture my life today, in the middle of 2011?

So what would I put in my 2011 Time Capsule?

Teeshirt

My first item would be this t-shirt, which I bought for Flea ahead of our trip to the Isle of Wight, and which has hardly been off her back since – she wears it whenever we go somewhere special where she wants to look cool. She calls it her ‘surfing t-shirt’ and is now counting down the days until our next summer trip to Devon, when I have said she can start surf lessons. Last week, she sat and watched it revolving in the washing machine. This t-shirt reminds me of her sense of excitement about this summer, and what it represents.

Blogcamp London 029Secondly, I’m choosing this photo of bloggers at the first BlogCamp in London last month. For me, 2011 will be the year I had a vague idea of organising free get-togethers for bloggers – and watched it grow into events all over the country, with amazing speakers and even bigger plans for 2012. This picture is the moment I thought, "ooh, I think it's going quite well".

Finally, I’d drop in a bottle of Jo Malone's Lime Basil and Mandarin scent because it's the scent I use as soon as I get a whiff of Spring, so it reminds me of days spent outdoors, holidays, birthdays and happy occasions. It's as close as you can get to joy in a bottle, without drinking something.

Because I'm perpetually nosy, I'm going to invite some of my blogging buddies to tell me about what they'd put into a time capsules to capture their lives in 2011. So, Vic, JenEmma Lindy,Claire and Pippa, consider yourselves tagged, ladies!

The rules are as follows:

  • Choose 3 items that sum up 2011 for you  –  pictures, songs, tickets, a favourite outfit – anything you like!
  • Write a post explaining the choices to the people of the future. Or the council staff who accidentally dig up your time capsule while repairing drains.
  • Include a link to this post in your time capsule post, and invite 3 people to take part if they'd like.
  • Please come and leave a link in the comments so we can all be completely nosy about your private things…
