A Competition. And why I’ll never be a beauty blogger.

A Competition. And why I’ll never be a beauty blogger.

Last month, a lovely PR person wanted me to try some Elizabeth Arden 8-hour cream.

Apparently, Elizabeth Arden cream is famous, and a classic because it’s been around since 1939. It moisturizes and protects your skin, and apparently it’s great for chapped lips, rough spots on your knees and elbows, and it softens tough cuticles.

It sounds great, right?

Well, unless I stopped to consider that now I’m supposed to worry about rough spots on my knees. I have approximately 55 billion things on my mind that I’m already worrying about and now one of them is, “Do I have rough spots on my knees?”

Anyway – and I am sure this is a deeply shameful confession for a woman of my age (23, obv) – I’m not really sure what a cuticle is. Or how I am supposed to know if mine are tough or not.

Hey ho. I do use moisturiser, though. I’m not a savage.

I have fair skin and I get sunburn very easily and so I do remember (most days) to use a moisturiser with a good SPF. And Elizabeth Arden 8-hour cream has a good SPF. It’s also good for everything from sunburn to patches of dry skin.

So I tried the Elizabeth Arden cream for three days. And I know lots of people ADORE this stuff but I have to say, it’s not for me. It’s really thick, and makes everything just a bit oily and shiny, and I can’t really get past the thought that I’m slathering my face with chip fat. I know it’s NOT chip fat, obviously. It’s a very luxurious cream, would be a better way to put it.

But you know how once you think something, you can’t UN-think it? That’s me, and this cream. I prefer a moisturiser that feels light and soaks in easily, without leaving a residue.

I also suspect I’m just a habitual beauty product buyer. My beauty collection (if you can call it that) consists of some Clinique daily moisturiser, Touche Eclat, tinted lip gloss, brown mascara and some Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin perfume. And that’s pretty much unchanged for more decades than I should probably admit to.

However, if you’d like to try this beauty classic for yourself, then Elizabeth Arden are offering one Who’s the Mummy reader the chance to win 1 x eight hour skin protectant cream (fragrance free), 1 x eight hour skin protectant cream original and 1 x eight hour skin protectant cream in handbag size (30ml) – that’s £50 worth of beauty goodness, right there.

  50. Vaseline. The poor woman’s 8 Hour Cream. I blew most of my student loan on Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream, or ‘Liz’ as we affectionately referred to it in our house. But I have a serious lip-balm addiction and at £20 a pop my habit was getting out of control. I thought about Liz constantly, night and day, and I even considered stealing to fund my habit until I realised I could get the same kick from Vas at 99p a go. So now it’s Vaseline. My husband is addicted to it too. He’s always nicking mine, drives me fecking potty. I’d like to point out that neither of us use it for anal sex though. He should be so lucky.

    Do I win £20?

  51. I couldn’t live without eyeliner. It helps hide the bags under my eyes (I hope)!

It’s expensive but worth it – no ugly chapped lips, it feels lovely and not at all greasy and it lasts for ages. I always have a pot in my handbag (or nappy bag these days).

  85. MRF Saunders says:

My Elizabeth Arden Honey Shimmer lipstick. It’s the only makeup that lives in my handbag. The colour suits me really well and it’s suitable for any occasion. But this is an every day usage thing and lasts quite well and tastes like peepermints. it colourless but leaves a lovely shine.

  296. sue willshee says:

my beauty staple is not a single item but rather a monthly ritual. Every month myself and my best pal go to Clarins skin spa for a tri-active facial because we buy courses of them when they are on offer. Of course we always end up buying the recommended products (not all of them obviously, we’d need to be millionaires to buy them all) but I always seem to have a new clarins pot to try.
I’m with you though, sometimes you try something and love it, other times you just don’t…and if you don’t you can’t make yourself change your mind about it. I’m like that with one of the Clarins products from their vital light range. I love most of the range but the serum just sits on the face and feels sticky.

Hmm I don’t moisturise. Or cleanse. And I decided back in 1992 that Foundation isn’t for pale, freckely folk like me. I’ve not got fantastic skin either, I am just lazy. To apply lotions and potions to my ropey bits would mean I’d have to spend minutes every day looking at those ropey bits. Plus that’s time I could spend doing other things, like winking at the postman.
Please dear lord don’t let me win the cream. I haven’t entered have I? Eeek have I ?! Because if I won I would hunt you down and sit on you and let’s face it that’s just not cricket.
    Heh heh chip fat…
