Lost in Translation

beavers

I remember once having a row with a guy friend over an onion. As you do. I was asking why, just because the 'best before' date was 24 hours earlier, he had felt the need to chuck out a perfectly good onion. To be fair, this is the kind of thing that happens all the time if you get mixed up with anyone with a science background. Everything has to be done exactly according to algorithm. I once caught my ex weighing frozen peas before boiling them - because the instructions on the packet … [Read more...]

Should children give Christmas presents?

Yesterday, all of Twitter was buzzing with conversation about the latest John Lewis Christmas ad, which I'm told will air during the X-Factor tonight. Seems it's had 180,000 views in less than 24 hours, so there's every chance you've seen it already, but if not, you're missing a treat of festive loveliness, that has reduced grown men to tears in this house.  Of course, though, bloggers are cynics and there was the odd remark about the travesty of The Smiths … [Read more...]

Split Personalities

Ask anyone who’s met Flea to describe her and the word ‘chatty’ is likely to come up sooner or later. My daughter loves to talk. She has an answer for anything, an opinion on everything, and a story for every day of the week. She loves language, too – she’ll never say ‘nice’ when she could say ‘stupendous’ or ‘awesome’ and one of her long-standing habits is to collect new phrases and try them out for size – at the moment half her sentences start with ‘To be honest’ or … [Read more...]

Why are we so bad at treating ourselves well?

I was chatting with a friend online this week and they were explaining to me why an upcoming night away from home for a social event is such a big deal for them. She said to me: “It’s the first time I’ve been away and done something by myself that didn’t involve a hospital stay since I had children.”  This from a woman whose eldest child is old enough to vote. I nodded understandingly because, well, that’s what you’re supposed to do but what I wanted to do was shake her by … [Read more...]

The Greatest Hits

Also known as: Sally's most popular blog posts.   In 14 months of blogging at Who's the Mummy, I've written some intense, heartfelt posts about parenting and the life of a working woman in her 30s. This, to be fair, isn't reflected in my top 10 most popular list, which looks a bit like this: Just Too Good Not To Share: my first real contact with the lesser-spotted Troll, a poor young chap who failed to recognise that 'Flea' might just be a nickname. And boy, was he mad. [read] Monkey porn: … [Read more...]

Liar, liar, pants on fire.

Yesterday, Flea knocked over a picture and tried to tell me it wasn't her - it was the dog. Nice try. Except we don’t have a dog. Obviously I told Flea that it’s very important to tell the truth and that if she tells the truth, I won’t be angry, I will be proud that she has enough respect for me to be honest. Like most of my parenting ‘wisdom’ this is nonsense, of course. I’m a compulsive liar as a parent. Some of the untruths I have told this week include: Of course I can make … [Read more...]

The One Where I Impress the Dentist.

I have a bit of a ‘thing’ about teeth. You know how some people have that anxiety dream about being naked in a crowd, or missing an exam? Mine is about my teeth falling out.So, I was a bit anxious about the idea of voluntarily allowing someone to take out one of my wisdom teeth. What if it hurt a lot? What if they took the wrong one? What if they pulled out one tooth, and it turned out that tooth was what was holding in the others and they ALL fell out? Needless to say, I was a … [Read more...]

Guest Post – It’s hard to hear the truth.

I don't usually write guest posts on this blog. Well, never, in fact. But a fellow blogger has written this post and asked me to publish it here for reasons that will become clear. Thanks to them for taking the time to write this and share it with us, and sorry for taking so long to publish your work! It's Hard To Hear The Unwanted Truth A day or so after Sally wrote a post about how you know you need a blogging intervention I had the conversation below with my dad. I had it mostly … [Read more...]
