Giveaway: Win a Kettler BBQ Worth £599

summer garden table

Can you smell it? Summer – just a hint of it – is in the air.

I can’t wait. Summer for us means taking time away from work and school, and getting outdoors. It’s also the perfect opportunity to spend more time with our favourite people.

Over the years, some of my happiest summer memories are of gathering outside with family and friends. In Brighton, we’d often take a huge picnic down to the beach after work, with juice for the kids and chilled beer for the adults. We would let the children play while we watched the sun set.

One of my favourite photos of Flea is this one, taken at a picnic when she was about seven. I’d gone down to Brighton for the summer and one day, I met up with three of my best friends and their kids, and we all went to the park for a picnic.

picnic park

I was missing Brighton badly then, having moved to a new town in Lancashire where I didn’t know anyone.

What I remember about this day was the relief and joy of knowing you’re with people who really GET you – and who love your child almost as much as you do. My friend Pippa had just surprised Flea with a birthday cake, and swept her in for a big cuddle.

I’m not sure I’ve ever found anything as special as my Brighton ‘tribe’ and it’s a big part of why I am so sure we’ll move back there, one day.

Last summer was the first time we really had a usable garden in our Lancashire house. After eight years. What can I say, I bought a fixer-upper and the garden was pretty much last on our to-do list.

My parents bought me a set of garden furniture for my birthday. We’d just had our rickety old garage removed, with flags laid and sockets put in. My Dad built me some wooden planters, and we filled the garden with flowers, and a herb garden.  Of course, it’s a family garden, so we added a trampoline for Flea, and a basketball hoop.

It’s now the perfect place to spend a summer’s day, and there’s room for Flea to play with friends, or to have a drink on a summer evening with friends. Heck, the WiFi even stretches that far, so I can do a bit of work, or stream music into the garden.

This year, I’d like to get some trailing plants over the walls, and some lighting up, so we can sit out as the sun goes down.

FORCE Lifestyle barbecue

Of course, the perfect way to christen a new garden is with a barbecue – and if you’re going to cook for friends, why not do it in style? I love the look of the new Everdure range from Kettler, designed in partnership with Heston Blumenthal.

The Everdure Force (£599 RRP) is a two-burner gas barbecue that’s simple to use, and ready to cook in under 5 minutes. Made of die-cast aluminium, it won’t rust, it’s available in four gorgeous colours.

Win an Everdure Barbecue, worth £599!

If you fancy getting your hands on the rather splendid and stylish Everdure Force barbecue, I have one to give away to a reader of Who’s the Mummy.

Happy times for me are when my parents, my children and I enjoy a picnic in the countryside. We often go to a place a littl inland from us called Slayley. It is a lovely part of the countryside where my parents used to take me and my siblings when we were little. We used to picnic right by a steam and we would make a campfire to cook sausages and bacon for sandwiches then we woud go walking along by the stream. Now I love taking my own children there to enjoy the same!

Any place by the water. A canal, a stream, a river, a pond… There is just something that sings to me and automatically relaxes me if I am by one of those. A perfect balm for the soul for this city dweller even if the weather is dire!
