What’s your most hated domestic chore?
I have a few, but changing duvet covers is probably one of the top candidates. Which is why I so often strip my bed at 8am, and then forget all about it until bedtime, when I walk into my bedroom to find that – ugh – I need to start trying to put on a clean duvet cover. And how often do you wash your duvets? It’s such a faff going to the launderette or to use the big machines at the supermarket.
The Joy of a Coverless Duvet
With the Night Owl range of coverless duvets from The Fine Bedding Company, there’s no cover to change. Instead, you can throw the whole caboodle into the washing machine, and then into the tumble drier. Hey presto, you have clean, dry bedding by the end of the day. This means no more wrestling with a duvet cover at bedtime.

A Bedroom Makeover
This weekend, we spruced up my bedroom, which is the last room in the house that we’ve sorted since moving into the new house. As a new build, my bedroom is (obviously) a white box – a little bland, and a little bleak. My goal was to make the room feel more cosy, and relaxing.
First, we painted the wall behind the bed in Farrow & Ball Elephant’s Breath, and added some Gilmore Girl prints that friends bought as a gift when we moved in. Second, I added my Fine Bedding Co coverless duvet, which is incredibly soft and light – it’s SO comfy to sleep under.
I switched the grey curtains with a cream pair, that help to lighten up the room, and added a shaggy sheepskin from Dunelm to soften the floor. Lastly, I bought a new lamp for the bedside table, from Wayfair.
Not everything is new. We don’t want to spend a fortune when we’ll probably be moving out soon. Besides, I’m a big believer in buying good quality furniture that lasts.
The bedside cabinet has a matching drawer set. It was from Heals and was purchased 23 years ago. It’s almost as old as the patchwork quilt on the bed, which I bought on my first work trip to San Francisco 24 years ago! The blanket next to the bed is from Pottery Barn – we bought it a few years back in San Diego because it’s SO fluffy. We bought the seat-cushion on the bed on the same trip and we had to buy a whole new bag that carried those two items all the way to the Grand Canyon and Hawaii before making it home with us.
Teddy – predictably – approves greatly of the new set-up. And it’s probably no bad thing that the duvet is washable because Teddy might be cute, but she is not always clean!
