So, I have a confession to make.
When Flea was younger, I never bought any of those Baby-Einstein-plinky-plonk-make-your-toddler-clever-by-magic CDs. Nor did I buy any sing-along-the-wheels-on-the-bus-until-you-want-to-tear-off-your-own-ears-because-you-can’t-listen-to-it-a-second-longer CDs.
When one of my friends asked me why, I said it was because I didn’t want to listen to them. Just like I never wanted to watch kids’ TV. So we didn’t watch it.
Some people might call this selfish parenting.
I call it maximising a tiny window of your life where you are actually in control. Why not make the most of being able to set rules while they’re too young to ignore you?
Instead, we listened to music I like. Which means Flea now loves to listen to loud guitar music, and Van Morrison, and the soundtracks from Glee. She says she doesn’t like One Direction, but she knows all the words, is all I’m saying.
I’m making the most of this opportunity – I fully realise that in about two years time everything I like musically will be TOTALLY LAME and instead Flea will be obsessed with some band that look like schoolchildren, who play music that I think doesn’t even have a tune. I’m going to make a GREAT old person, I can tell already.
Introducing your kids to live music is a huge moment, and I’m really looking forward to seeing some concerts with Flea this year – we had a great time at Glee Live a couple of years ago, and Flea loved X-Factor Live, but I do sort of feel like we cheated – it’s not proper music, is it?
Anyway – this summer Magic Summer Live is a fab two-day music festival in Guilford on July 13 and 14th, full of people who can sing and play instruments and make good records. The line-up includes James Morrison, Joss Stone, Ocean Colour Scene, Beverley Knight and Squeeze. There’s loads of activities and entertainment for children from bouncy castles to arts and crafts; kids under 4 get in free, and there’s even a dedicated queue for families, so you don’t get caught up in the crowds.
You can see the full line-up and buy tickets on the Magic Summer website.

We love Squeeze and my kids know all the words to Cool for Cats and Up the Junction! Would love to see them live (with or without Jools!)
The Overtones-There harmonies are very impressive.
Ocean Colour Scene – played them to death on a family holiday to Cornwall years ago (when my son was just a year old) and entertained the kids with them ever since – they’d love to see them live. In case you wondered he’s 15 now – so that’s a lot of Ocean Colour Scene!
really really want to make this a family magic moment Guildfest was always great so let there be magic
abbacadabra let the magic begin
I’m sure even my teenagers would thank me for introducing them to the genius of Nile Rodgers and Chic.
Jamiroquai
I would love to take my lot to this festival, sounds great. I am most looking forward to introducing my children to David Bowie, both myself and Purpledad are fans. In particular the song ‘Kooks’ because it is about kooky parenting, which I subscribe to. Fingers crossed.
Aswad, they were really underated but a great british reggae band
Would have to be Bryan Adams
Ocean colour scene
My son would be disappointed that AC/DC or Led Zep aren’t playing – my OH’s been introducing him to those (to my disgust). For me, it would be Bryan Adams
From the line up I’ve had most fun introducing the boys to Jamiroquai! I’ve also recently been introducing my 5 yr old to the Stone Roses which has been funny as he confuses them with the Rolling Stones.. 😉
I’d love to show the boys jamiroquai!
Bryan Adams given I saw him play twice at Wembley Arena in the Eighties. Be awesome to see Kim Wilde, Squeeze and James Morrison too. Would LOVE to go, it’s taking place 20 minutes walk away from my house :))
I personally would love go introduce my kids to the sounds of Bryan Adams. Well, I’m pretty sure they’ve heard me belt out a not-so-talented rendition of Summer of 69 already!
My hubs would say Ocean Colour Scene though.
This is exactly the sort of thing we’d all LOVE. X
Ocean Colour Scene, because, you know, The Day We caught The Train…
Bryan Adams 🙂
Jamiroquai! My 6 year old daughter already dances like Napoleon Dynamite and knows all the words to Just Dance! Then there’s my 11 year old step-daughter who thinks JLS and Bieber are great. She NEEDS educating!
There’s so many acts to choose from and it’s a fantastic opportunity to get the kids listening to LIVE music for a change!
I’d most like to introduce them to Jamiroquai and I’m hoping Jay Kay will have his usual array of dapper hats too!!
Bring on the sunshine! x
My three little ones love a dance especially Albert who is just three and has some disco moves to show!!…..so most definitely they should be introduced to the brilliant Jamiroquai. My husband has always loved his music so it would be a weekend to remember. Plus we haven’t taken them camping yet so it would be pretty exciting x
Hi,
Firstly, I would like to say, I am in total agreement with what you have done with ‘Flea’. We do the same with Nora, she particularly likes Rock Guitar and stamps her feet to it! If we won tickets, would be very excited taking her to Ocean Colour Scene as I can just see her now, bopping her little bottom along to it (she is 15 months old). Fingers crossed for winning 🙂
Thank you
we have differing opinions on music in our house – Hubby is a drum and base, and hardcore nut, while he refers to preferred listening as ‘pop rubbish’! we both agree the kids needs as much access to live music as possible, and think Jamiroquai – my 9 year old Belieber will probably disagree mind!!
ELO in the car – Heavon or Hell for them ????
Ocean Colour Scene as I have seen them play live before.
the overtones!
Squeeze ! I actually went to a gig they did and it was fantastic (a long time ago)
Ocean Colour Scene as this reminds me of my teenage years
I introduced my little one to the joys of drum and bass at an early age (his lullaby music was Pendulum or Chase and Status lol) but he does love a bit of Bryan Adams!!
What a fantastic line up. I have seen James Morrison before and he is superb.
has to be Brian addams i love him and his song go have them on all day
i fully admit to being “stuck in the eighties” when it comes to my music choice, don’t get me wrong i like lots of recent stuff from The Script, to Michael Buble, however in the car all the cd.s are eighties stuff, so my daughter will happily sing along to the likes of The Human League, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and my all time favourite The Pet Shop Boys
if would have to be ha ha
Queen as now they love them as much as I do!
Ocean Colour Scene
the clash 🙂
madness
MY boys would love Ocean Colour Scene!
My children love lots of Bryan Adams songs, it would be amazing for them to see him perform live
Ocean Colour Scene
Soul II Soul will take me back to my youth.. Smiletastic fun
We’d love to see James Morrison, my wife & kids would think I was the best hubby / dad ever! esp as it’s on in my hometown! yay! 🙂
TheFoo Fighters – “Walk” is now my sons favourite song :0)
Ocean Colour Scene
Jamiroquai
bryan adams all the way!
Jamiroquai!
beverley knight a great singer and deserves alot more credit
Glee – do they count as a band?! Failing that – *whispers……Spice Girls*!!!!
The Overtones 🙂
Jamiroquai
I would love to introduce my niece to any of these bands but especially Bryan Adams – the man made history !!!
Ocean colour scene, and I’ve never seen them live before neither!
Ocean Colour Scene
Wow what a prize and thank you for giving us all the chance to win, I would love to see all the acts because I love them all and they are all from my era ans what a fab era the 80’s was, I love listening to Magic Radio all day and have tried to win these precious tickets on there show many a morning. If I had to choose it would have to be one of my Idols Bryan Adams <3 I also love chic and Jamiroquai to name a few 🙂
Joss Stone for me!
Ours would have to be Bryan Adams, me and the hubs are huge fans of his, and we had his Heaven tune as our wedding song, our little girls have heard the tune, but not the man himself, so to be able to say to them, hey that’s mum and dad’s wedding song, (If he plays it) and that’s the man who sang it.
The girls are big softies, and Im pretty sure they’d be very impressed with this.
Ocean Colour Scene! Love them
Has to be Ocean Colour Scene – Loved this band in the 90s
ocean colour scene
My parents always seemed to play Paul Simon’s brilliant Gracelands album when I was growing up in the late ’80s, early ’90s. I still listen to it a lot now. It was this and lots of classical music, like Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, and all that. There’s the old “Mozart Effect” postulation of listening to his music making you smarter. I’ve certainly noticed a lot of people claiming they listen to classical in order to help them study, so it must have some soothing qualities.
I’m going to be controversial and say ASWAD! Daisy and I often sing along to ‘Shine’ in the mornings, haha. It’s one of our favourite songs! (shhh, don’t tell anyone!) x
I’d love to introduce my kids to the music of Joss Stone. She went to their school and they’ve heard her name but they have no idea what an amazing voice she has.
Jamiroquai
Would have to be Squeeze – they were a huge part of my teenage years. They practised at an unused swimming baths near my school and we used to sneak in and wathc them rehearse.
its got to be Bryan Adams
Bryan Adams but not sure they will be thrilled
Jamiroquai!!!!! What a line up we would so love to win this!
Definitely The Overtones!
Bryan Adams
The overtones- I love them!
Joss Stone …. my daughter would love her 🙂
Jamiroquai – legend!
OMG I have only just seen this festival. I can choose they are all fantastic, would love to see jamiroqui
Ocean Colour Scene, easy songs to ‘sing’ to 😀 😀
Saw Soul II Soul 20 years ago. Bet they are still FAB.
No matter how hard I’ve tried my 7 year old is still obsessed by ABBA. Could be worse I guess.
We just took them to Glastonbury and they absolutely loved CHIC so they do have some taste.
Definitely U2 as they are a band of the life!
Depeche Mode as it is a band of my time
It’s a really difficulat choice as the line up is so good. At a push i’d say Jamiroquai, but it was close between them and Aswad and the overtones and level 42! Can I say all 4 of them?
Ocean Colour Scene – they were MY band growing up!
The Overtones, my kids love their harmonies.
I’d love to see Asward, Soul II Soul so many memories! All the acts are brilliant. We’ve never been to a festival so this would be a great day out!
i have no kids so i introduce my niece to music i know my sister will hate
has to be bryan adams legend
Not a band as such but our whole family enjoy listening to Otis Redding.
🙂
bryan adams
Level 42
It has to be the Brit Pop bands – Oasis and Blur, from my heyday! 🙂
The Wurzles… !
It’s gotta be OCS. One of the first ever gigs I went to was OCS at Wembly Arena. Great Stuff
Would have to be Bryan Adams….as he was number one(even if he did knock Jason Donovan off top spot) the day I started work just reminds me so much of that summer.
