Finding the Balance

Today?

Just… one of those days.

The wireless mouse fell out with the Mac. The Mac fell out with the email newsletter software. The kittens declared war on the router cable. And then I fell out with Google Plus.

Seriously, though, I think someone with a different sort of brain to me invented that site – because to me? It. Makes. No. Sense. At. All. There were a couple of misunderstandings at work, and I spent my entire evening fielding emails when I should have been cooking dinner and chilling out with a book.

I wish today had been a nicer day. Because it was Flea’s birthday. And I wanted it to be a happy sort of day.

Which it was, of course – for Flea. Which I suppose is what counts, when it’s your birthday.

But as I was explaining to someone when I finally worked out how to ‘hang out’ on G+, the thing about my job is that it REALLY is 24/7. My clients are online Monday to Friday, 9 to 5. But my site’s members are online evenings and weekends. And if I want to keep them both happy, I pretty much have to be always available.

Some days I make a better job of that than others. Today was one of the other days.

And because the universe has a sense of humour, it’s always those days when the technology becomes self-aware and, in HAL fashion, gangs up on you, maliciously malfunctioning or moving buttons on websites so you can no longer work out how to save things, or get back to where you started. Bloody computers.

Of course,  the only thing to do on a day like that is to walk out of the front door, and keep walking until you see this…

It helped. Like I knew it would.

I love the space, and the calm of the sea. I love the scale of it, and the smell, and the sound. I can’t imagine living anywhere that’s more than a five minute walk from somewhere like this. No matter where the next couple of years take us, I never want to be more than a 10 minute walk from a beach. It’s the perfect counter-balance to everything else.
